Find your water meter, usually near the curb or in a box by the driveway. Write down every digit, including the small sweep dial.
Use no water for two hours
No taps, no toilets, no dishwasher, no laundry, no irrigation. Nothing. Ice makers count, so switch that off too.
Read it again
Same meter, same digits. If anything moved at all, water is going somewhere it should not be.
Nothing moved
Your plumbing is holding. Whatever is bothering you is somewhere you can see, and that is usually the cheaper kind of problem.
The dial moved
Water is escaping while nobody is using any. That is a real leak, and it has been running up your bill the whole time.
